An enigmatic medieval weight
Lot 350
Byzantine Weights, Circa 11-13th/14th centuries or somewhat later. Weight (Bronze, 31x34 mm, 37.35 g), a square commercial (?) weight of an uncertain standard with plain edges. Latin Cross within the outlines of a Byzantine cross; to lower left and right, K - D. Rev. Plain. Very well engraved and beautifully preserved. Minor deposits, otherwise, extremely fine.

From an interesting European collection of Byzantine coin & commercial weights.

This is a mysterious weight: it is very well preserved and bears a sharply engraved cross of interesting design, but what the Latin letters K - D stand for and what weight standard it represents is beyond the knowledge of this cataloguer. The piece is probably of high medieval origin, however, and might be related to the activities of the Crusaders and the Italian city states in the Levante.
